Through 60 Years of Milestones, Pioneering Modular Construction May Be the Biggest Yet
An article published in Construction in Focus spotlighted the 60th anniversary of FK Architecture and the design developments the firm has embraced over the years. The article noted that six decades into its practice, FK remains an active player in such sectors as mixed-use, commercial, renovation, hospitality, senior living, multifamily, apartments/condominiums, as well as micro homes. The piece explored the firm's legacy and community outreach efforts, commitment and work in the affordable housing sector, incorporation of modular techniques, and predictions on the future trends in the industry.
“One of the biggest things that has changed in the industry is modular construction,” said FK Managing Principal Gary Badge. “Modular speaks to all of those issues, and we are getting lots of opportunities to present our services in that realm... I’ve taken on the mission to promote modular because I feel strongly about it. I think it’s the way of the future and a significant alternative to conventional building."
A highly diverse company, FK welcomes staff from many different cultural backgrounds, which is a key factor in its success. Today FK Architecture employs a staff of 53 people. The firm will celebrate its 60th anniversary on October 27 with staff, clients, and friends in attendance—in addition to FK founders Bob Koch and Lyle Fugleberg.
The firm remains proud of its many affordable housing projects over the decades and believes micro homes will soon play a key role. Looking at prototypes in the single-family and micro housing market, FK’s view on affordability doesn’t necessarily mean “low-income” but rather attainability for buyers. “We have streamlined things from our years of experience and come up with a concept we think will be very beneficial to communities,” says Badge on FK's work in the micro-housing market.
Badge discussed how even though modular construction is much in evidence throughout the United States, it has not yet adequately taken hold in the Southeast. He believes his firm can take point on developing it in the region, especially in Florida.
“We’ve been active in the sector, and I don’t know any other firm that’s as active as FK Architecture,” he said. “I’d like to see us take that lead and bring modular to our clients.”
